Participants of the 4th International Summit of Cities and Regions “Partnership. Resilience. Readiness” visited the Chornobyl NPP and the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone on 25 May 2026. More than 180 participants took part in the visit, including officials of the Kyiv Regional State Administration headed by Governor Mykola Kalashnyk, representatives of the Office of the President of Ukraine, as well as numerous international delegations.
On 23 May 2026, the Chornobyl NPP hosted a delegation from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine headed by the Chargé d'Affaires, Mr Maximilian Rasch (Dr Maximilian Bodo Konrad Rasch).
The delegation paid a technical visit to the plant’s key facilities to familiarize themselves with the current safety status and ongoing activities at the Chornobyl NPP site. The visitors toured the unit control rooms of Units 3 and 4, Control Room and the Main Volume of the New Safe Confinement, as well as the Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management.
On 20 May 2026, within the framework of Grant Agreement No.2 “Priority Projects to Support Restoration of Safety, Security and Infrastructure at Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant”, ChNPP received four Iveco vehicles.
The Grant Agreement was signed in October 2024 between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, acting as the administrator of the funds, and the SSE Chornobyl NPP. The grant financing was provided by the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account.
The Grant Agreement is aimed, among other things, at restoring the transport infrastructure and strengthening the overall operational capacity of the Chornobyl NPP, which is particularly important given the substantial losses of vehicles and equipment the enterprise sustained as a result of the Russian invasion and occupation of the site.
Earlier, under the same Grant Agreement, ChNPP had already received specialised vehicles, spare parts, and consumables required to ensure the reliable operation of the systems of the New Safe Confinement.
SSE Chornobyl NPP has received specialised transport under Grant Agreement No. 2, ‘Priority Projects to Support Safety and Infrastructure Restoration at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’. This agreement was signed in October 2024 between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), as the administrator of grant funds provided by the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account, and SSE “Chornobyl NPP”.
Among other things, the agreement provides for the supply of goods, works and services necessary to restore the transport infrastructure and capabilities of SSE ChNPP in connection with the destruction, damage or loss of equipment and resources resulting from the russian invasion of Ukraine and the occupation of the Chornobyl NPP.
This is the first of a series of planned deliveries; in the near future, the ChNPP expects to receive important specialised transport: a road machine, a sludge suction vehicle, lorries and other items. It should be noted that, previously, under the same grant agreement, ChNPP received spare parts and consumables for the operation of the New Safe Confinement systems.
Russian aggression against Ukraine is fundamentally changing the principles of nuclear safety that have evolved over the 40 years since the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The task of the international community is to consolidate efforts in response to these new challenges and to prevent new accidents or incidents that could permanently undermine confidence in nuclear energy.
This was among the key topics discussed during a thematic event dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, held on 13 May at NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
The event was moderated by Boris Ruge, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, who will soon take up the post of German Ambassador to Ukraine. The Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Aliona Hetmanchuk, representatives of NATO member states, and international partners also took part in the event.
The SSE Chornobyl NPP and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development have signed Grant Agreement No. 6 “Works and Services to Support the Repair and Restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant after the Russian Military Attack on February 14, 2025”.
The signing ceremony took place on April 26 within the framework of the International Chornobyl Conference on Restoration and Nuclear Safety. The event was attended by Director General of SSE Chornobyl NPP Serhii Tarakanov, EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso, Director of the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department Balthazar Lindauer, and the First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.
On April 26, 2026, commemorative events were held at the Chornobyl NPP site to mark the 40 th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster.
High-level international and national delegations attended the event, including President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Moldova Maia Sandu, First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso, as well as European Commissioners Valdis Dombrovskis and Dan Jørgensen, energy ministers of partner countries, and other distinguished guests. The participants paid tribute to the memory of the accident’s liquidators and all victims of the tragedy, expressing deep gratitude for their courage,heroism and self-sacrifice.
On 23 April 2026, representatives of the Clean Futures Fund (CFF) met in Slavutych with Serhii Tarakanov, Director General of the Chornobyl NPP, to discuss the results of previous cooperation and future prospects.
“We are sincerely grateful to our partners for their unwavering support and trust. In the most difficult times, initiatives like these become a strong foundation for people. Together, we overcome challenges and shape a future in which responsibility and mutual support truly matter”, Serhii Tarakanov noted during the meeting.
The Clean Futures Fund is a U.S.-based non-profit humanitarian organization founded by Erik Kambarian and Lucas Hixson, who visited the Chornobyl NPP between 2009 and 2015 as part of the RAG-ER program for professionals, developed by Carl Willis and the Willis Scientific. In 2016, they established the CFF.
Initially, the Clean Futures Fund project was planned for three years and focused exclusively on the capture and sterilization of stray animals, which were numerous at the Chornobyl NPP site. It was expected that each summer, a team of five veterinarians, volunteers, and professional dog catchers would travel to the Exclusion Zone to carry out sterilization, maintain animal records, and monitor their condition after medical procedures.
