A meeting of the Ukrainian Supervisory Board (USB), dedicated to strategic cooperation between Ukraine and the EU within the framework of the European Union Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation on (INSC) was held on July 8, 2026

The key objective of the meeting was to update the priorities for joint work for the coming years and the long-term perspective. Serhii Tarakanov, Director General of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, took part in the event on behalf of the enterprise. The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s position was presented in the context of overcoming current challenges and strategic planning.

During the meeting, the current technical condition of the New Safe Confinement was presented, a schedule for the necessary repair works was outlined, and the scale of financial and technical assistance from EU partners to ensure the stable operation of the protective structure was justified.

Priority steps were also identified to finalise restoration work at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant’s industrial site and in the Exclusion zone.

During the strategic sessions of the meeting, the plant’s integration plans into the European nuclear safety framework were agreed upon, and the Chornobyl NPP aligned its current operational and safety priorities with the INSC funding programmes for the next two years.

The European Commission and representatives of the Supervisory Board confirmed their readiness to support the Chornobyl NPP both in resolving the urgent issues relating to NSC repair and in long-term plans for the development of the site’s safety.
