From July 27 to 31, 2026, a technical meeting on the application of IAEA safeguards at the facilities of SSE Chornobyl NPP and the Centralised Spent Fuel Storage Facility (CSFSF) was held in Vienna, Austria. The event was organized by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) and the U.S. Department of Energy / National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) within the framework of the International Nuclear Safeguards Engagement Program (INSEP).

The meeting served as a platform for working consultations between IAEA experts, SNRIU of Ukraine, and Ukrainian specialists responsible for the practical implementation and support of international safeguards at the SSE Chornobyl NPP and CSFSF facilities. The parties discussed a number of key areas, including the practical application of IAEA safeguards at the sites of the exclusion zone enterprises, nuclear material accounting and control, conducting inspections, development and optimization of facility-level safeguards working procedures, coordination of personnel training plans, technical knowledge management directly at the sites, and other issues.

Separately, the delegation of SSE "Chornobyl NPP" worked on optimizing the structure of key measurement points for nuclear materials in the material balance area of the New Safe Confinement – Arch (NSC-Arch) complex, approaches to quantifying the mass of nuclear materials with complex compositions, as well as the possibility of terminating the application of safeguards to certain nuclear materials.

The delegation of SSE "Chornobyl NPP" was headed by Technical Director – Chief Engineer Oleksandr Titarchuk. The group also included Deputy Technical Director for Radioactive Waste Management Oleksandr Skomarokhov, Head of the Integrated Radioactive Materials Management Department Oleksiy Myasnykov, and Nuclear Material Accounting and Storage Engineer Tetiana Morozova.

Based on the results of their participation, the delegation will prepare proposals for improving nuclear material accounting and control at the SSE Chornobyl NPP and will ensure the dissemination of the acquired experience among the enterprise's relevant specialists.
